Tier I/AAA Hockey Expands in the Carolinas
The Carolina Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) has recently approved a second Tier I/AAA youth hockey program in the Affiliate, enabling elite players from more regions of North and South Carolina to participate at the most competitive level.
The strategic location of a new hub located in Charlotte will allow top players to join the ranks of other AAA caliber players currently competing at the Tier I level.
Sanctioned by CAHA,the program will be overseen by the Charlotte Metro Hockey Association (CMHA) and will receive support from both the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.
“We spoke to coaches and people who know the kids and the talent is there,” said Derek Wilkinson, former Head Coach of the Charlotte Checkers and one of the key figures that will be instrumental in the development of the program.
“We wanted to give kids in the Carolinas that haven’t had the opportunity to compete at the highest levels the chance to stay in their local market and do it in an economical fashion,” said Wilkinson. “The idea is to keep expanding the kids’ horizons and to give them all the tools necessary so all they have to worry about is what happens on the ice. We have a lot of skilled players at the local level and it’s very exciting,” he said.
The new team, to be named “Carolina Checkers AAA”, will offer more players an opportunity to participate in Tier I /AAA hockey without affecting their eligibility to continue playing on their local Tier II teams.
Ultimately, one of the major goals of the program is to establish a full season, Tier I/AAA U16 team by the 2014-2015 season. Until then, some of the major benefits the program will offer include fielding teams at the 12U, 14U and 16U age classifications. Teams will participate in two,Tier I/AAA Tournaments to be held on Labor Day Weekend and in early November. Open tryouts for the Carolina Checkers AAA teams have been set for the weekend of August 11-12th, 2012 and will be held at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, NC. There will also be a mini-camp in mid August that will include team building, on-ice practices, chalk talk and off-ice conditioning. More information will be available in the coming weeks on the program’s official website: www.carolinacheckersAAA.com
